The Olympics at the Millennium: Power, Politics, and the Games: Power, Politics and the Games

(as of Jul 03,2019 12:17:10 UTC – Details)

The Olympics thrill the world with spectacle and drama. They also carry a cultural and social significance that goes beyond the stadium, athletes, and fans. The  Games are arenas in which individual and team athletic achievement intersect with the politics of national identity in a global context.

The Olympics at the Millennium offers groundbreaking essays that explore the cultural politics of the Games. The contributors investigate such topics as the emergence of women athletes as cultural commodities, the orchestrated spectacles of the opening and closing ceremonies, and the alternative sport culture offered via the Gay Games. Unforgettable events and decisions are discussed: Native American athlete Jim Thorpe winning—and losing—his two gold medals in 1912. Why America was one of the few countries to actually send Jewish athletes to the “Nazi Olympics.” The disqualification of champion Ewa Klobukowska from competing as a woman, due to chromosomal testing in 1967.

With the 2000 Sydney Games imminent, several essays address concerns with which every host country must contend, such as the threat of terrorism. Highlighting the difficult issues of racism and nationalism, another article explores the efforts of this country’s aboriginal people to define a role for themselves in the 2000 Games, as they struggle with ongoing discrimination. And with the world watching, Sydney faces profound pressure to implement a successful Olympics, as a matter of national pride.

European Foreign Conflict Reporting: A Comparative Analysis of Public News Providers (Media, War and Security)

$160.00 - $121.23

(as of Jun 22,2019 11:38:15 UTC – Details)

This book explores the state of European foreign conflict reporting by public-sector broadcasters, post-Cold war and post-9/11.

It compares the values of three television news providers from differing public systems: BBC’s News at 10, Russia’s Vremya and France 2’s 20 Heures. The book examines how these three news providers have reported and broadcast the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict, which pre-dates both the change in East-West relations and the events of 9/11. In doing so, the work identifies and analyses the role of public and state-aligned broadcasters and illustrates how certain news values are consistently prioritised by the broadcasters and the effect this has on how news stories are portrayed. The book is divided into two parts. Part I focuses on 2006 to 2008 and provides a detailed quantitative overview of the broadcasters’ news values. Part II provides an update of the analysis by examining coverage of the war in Gaza 2014 and discusses the findings from audience research into perceptions of this latter war. This book explains that not only do hierarchies in news values exist in foreign conflict reporting but that they are never arbitrary and can be explained, in part, by the structure of the broadcasters and by events occurring within, or associated with, the reporting country, resulting in nationally differentiated perceptions of conflict throughout the world.

This book will be of much interest to students of media studies, war and conflict studies, Middle East politics and international relations in general.

The Liberator Magazine / October, 1919 / Maurice Sterne cover art. Nicolai Lenin

(as of Jun 22,2019 02:26:32 UTC – Details)

New York: The Liberator Publishing Company, 1919. First Edition. Cover art, “Russia Victorious”, by Lydia Gibson. Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 50 pp. Poor, in that this issue is disbound in its entirety, though it is complete. Pages are quite fragile, and a few have chipped; hence, just the one scan. Please see scans. The October, 1919 issue (Volume 3, No.1, serial number 22) of the famed and seminal creation of Max Eastman and his sister Crystal Eastman, with which they picked up the flag from The Masses, which had been shut down by the U.S. Government on the basis of postal regulations. A socialist publication like The Masses, The Liberator had, in addition to ideological commentary, a variety of art, poetry and short fiction, including many covers and other interior artwork by a number of talented artists – in this issue, no less than Maurice Sterne (cover and interior), Art Young, William Gropper, Boardman Robinson, and Maurice Becker. Inexpensively produced, but trenchant and destined to become enshrined in American political publishing history. By late 1924, The Liberator itself would itself be closing its doors, to be briefly replaced by the Workers Monthly. Contributions in this issue are by some timeless names: Max Eastman, Nicolai Lenin, Leslie Nelson Jennings, Stirling Bowen, Hiram K. Moderwell, Jessie Wallace Hughan, Crystal Eastman, William Gallacher, Floyd Dell, Heywood Broun, and Ethel Monticue. An amazing piece of American political publishing history, in separate leaves now, and tattered a bit as well. But simply not replaceable as what it is. Please review scans. l-Lng

HIV/AIDS Treatment and Prevention in India: Modeling the Costs and Consequences (Health, Nutrition, and Population Series)

$15.00 - $17.09

(as of Jun 21,2019 10:07:46 UTC – Details)

How should governments respond to the increasing domestic and international pressures to finance antiretroviral therapy for AIDS patients? Once prohibitively expensive outside rich countries, antiretroviral therapy is now increasingly affordable, especially in India where patent laws and a dynamic pharmaceutical industry have facilitated the production and marketing of some of the best available drug combinations at prices below a dollar a day.

This title projects the future implications of three alternative AIDS treatment financing policies for the health burden of AIDS in India and for its overall health expenditures. The Indian government’s 2004 treatment initiative contains elements of all three of these options. Written by an interdisciplinary team of AIDS experts, the book presents new data on the supply and demand for antiretroviral treatment in India and new models of the epidemiological effects and the financial costs of alternative policies. The book shows that the lower prices of antiretroviral therapy, plus the fact that therapy can reduce transmission by the treated patient, imply that such therapy could save healthy years of life at a cost of between $146 and $280 per year.

However, these conclusions depend on the assumption that treatment has no effect on risk behavior in key populations which account for most of the epidemic’s spread. Sensitivity analysis reveals that multiplier effects due to behavioral responses would overwhelm the direct biological effects of treatment, leading the authors to recommend that India proceed cautiously. Careful monitoring of the population’s response to treatment availability should suggest how to maximize the beneficial effects of treatment on risk behavior and to avoid the perverse effects.Used Book in Good Condition

From Data to Decision Making in Health: The Evolution of a Health Management Information System

(as of Jun 20,2019 11:17:17 UTC – Details)

Data are collected or aggregated at every level of health care systems, but are not always put to use. From Data to Decision Making in Health argues that collecting the right data, converting it to information and putting it to work in making decisions can both increase commitment among staff and provide a firm basis for management. Information can help to connect decisions to the realities of the situation – for example, who is being served, whether targets are realistic and being met in the time specified, and trends over time. A health management information system (MIS) in which information is used for decision making at the level where it is generated allows health facility staff to see if they are getting results; it also helps other management levels to identify health facilities, districts and regions in need of support and supervision. This makes it possible to use information to make better decisions about the allocation of scarce resources, and to improve the quality and coverage of health care services.
This case study from Ghana illustrates the difficulties of a transition from a reporting system, in which data is simply passed along to higher levels, to a management information system. Here data collection leads to self assessment and decision making, and the information produced moves in a circle, feeding back into the system. A comprehensive picture of the MIS design process and the lessons learned emerges, which is generally applicable to the implementation of MIS in developing countries. Examples of MIS tools are given, including blank copies for your own use.
